Frequently asked questions

We have compiled the responses to some commonly asked questions about applying for a role.

Where can I find a list of current vacancies?

All our vacancies are listed on our website at jobs.dartford.gov.uk. 

How do I create an account?

Select Register situated at the left hand side of this candidate portal to open the 'Register as a Candidate' page and follow the instructions.

How do I set up job alerts?

Select 'Manage Job Alerts' on the left hand side of the candidate portal.  Enter your search criteria, your email address, alert name, frequency e.g. daily, weekly, monthly and period of time you wish to continue to receive alerts.  Once your job search criteria has been saved you will receive email notifications of any jobs that match your search criteria.

Can I register my details with jobs.dartford.gov.uk to send me information on any future positions available?

Yes you can register with jobs.dartford.gov.uk at any time to be advised of possible jobs you may be interested in.  You can set this up once your have created an account with us.  Follow the process 'How do I create an account' and 'How do I set up job alerts'.

Applying for a job

How old do I have to be to work at the council?

Anyone who has reached school leaving age i.e. has left school or will be leaving school after the last Friday in June of the school year in which they are 16.  In addition to the recruiting manager's duty to access the health and safety risks, there are particular responsibilities to assess risks to all young people under the age of 18 years of age, before they start work. 

Can I apply for posts just using a CV?

As we need the same range of information from all candidates we are not able to accept CVs or testimonials in place of an application form.  If you have any queries relating to this please contact us.

Where do I get an application pack from?

The majority of jobs on this website allow you to apply online and any information concerning the job, e.g. Job Profile will be attached to the on-line job advert.   If you require a hard copy application form or a job does not allow you to apply online then please contact us.

Can I apply for more than one role?

Yes.  There are many different positions within the Council that may suit your needs.  You can save your application form online so you only need to complete the supporting information for each new job you apply for.

How long do I have to apply?

Each vacancy has a closing date which is displayed on the advert.  As long as your form is submitted by that date you can take as long as your wish to complete the form.  If you have started an online form but not completed it then you will receive an e-mail reminder as the closing date approaches.  The email will remind you of the closing date of the advert.  If you do not submit your application before the closing date then your application cannot be considered.

Where do I return my application form?

Any applications that are made online are submitted straight into the system which in turn allows you to track the progress of your application.  For any job applications that are advertised outside the online system please refer to the job advert for where to return your application form or contact us.

Can I print the application form?

Yes - on the final page of the application, before submitting your application, there is a facility to preview your form.  When you open your form in the preview window you will be able to locate the  'printer icon'.  If you want to print off any previous applications these can be viewed from 'overview of applications' from 'your account'.

When will I hear if I have been offered an interview?

All applicants who have applied online (or have requested to be contacted via email) will receive email notifications when there has been a change in status to their application, including invite to interviews.  

Is there any flexibility on interview dates/times?

With our current system we usually offer a choice of times for interviews on a particular day and you will be asked to login to your account on the jobs.dartford.gov.uk site and choose a time which best suits you.  If you need to change the date/time of your interview you can do so by releasing your interview slot and booking another one, if there are alternative slots available.  If there are no slots available or you are not able to attend on the interview date you will need to contact us so we can advise if there are any other interview dates available.

If you wish to cancel your interview/withdraw your application, simply login to your account on jobs.dartford.gov.uk and release your interview slot and then withdraw your application by clicking into 'withdraw applications' on the left hand side of the candidate home page and follow the instructions.

How do I find out if a job requires a DBS/Disclosure Scotland check before I can start working?

If a job needs the appointed candidate to have a DBS check this will be stated in the job advert.

How long will it take for me to start in my role, after being appointed to a position?

This depends on whether the role needs DBS/Disclosure Scotland clearance before the candidate can start. 

All appointments are subject to satisfactory references and work health assessments.  References should be from your current (or most recent if you are currently unemployed) and previous employers and should cover the last 3 years of employment. You may therefore need to submit details of more than 2 referees.  You can submit  details of up to 4 referees on the online application form. 

If the role involves working with vulnerable adults then one of your referees must be from a previous job where you have worked with vulnerable adults.

The quicker we receive satisfactory references and medical clearance the sooner we can give you a start date.
 

I have forgotten my password

In the login section, click on 'password reminder' to open the password re-set page.  Enter your email address and click 'notify me'.  This will send a password re-set instruction to the system and you will receive an email to enable you to re-set your password.

 

I am having problems submitting an online form

If you are experiencing problems with your on-line application form please try the following:

  • Try deleting your cookies/temporary Internet files.
  • Ensure that your privacy settings aren't set too high.
  • Ensure you have a strong internet connection.
  • Check that your internet cable is plugged into your router/socket.  Sometimes Wi-Fi signals can drop their connections due to a variety of reasons and this may end your session un-expectedly.
  • Save the section you are working on regularly as any break in Internet connection may result in your session timing out and you could lose your work.
  • If you are entering lengthy responses, draft them out in Word or another text editor so you have a backup copy should anything go wrong.
  • Review your computer settings and try other browsers if possible.
  • Try accessing your application on another computer as this could help determine if the issue is specifically linked to your own computer settings.
  • If you are using an Antivirus software make sure that jobs.dartford.gov.uk is a trusted website.
  • Increase test size by clicking on Ctrl key and scrolling your mouse wheel.
